Join Liz Hammond Kaarremmaa and Leslie Helitsaliga Eastwood (Samish) for a conversation about Coast Salish Weaving and Hammond Kaarremmaa's latest book, The Teachings of Mutton: A Coast Salish Woolly Dog. Until now, there has been very little written about the enigmatic Coast Salish Woolly Dog, orsqwmey' in the Hul'q'umi'num language. According to Indigenous Oral Histories of the Pacific Northwest, this small dog was bred for thousands of years for its woolly fibers, which were woven into traditional blankets, robes and regalia. Although the dogs were carefully protected by Coast Salish peoples, by the 1900s, the Woolly Dog had become so rare it is now considered extinct. Co-authored with weavers, Knowledge Keepers, and Elders, The Teachings of Mutton interweaves. perspectives from Musqueam, Squamish, Stó:lō, Suquamish, Cowichan, Katzie, Snuneymuxw, and Skokomish cultures with narratives of science, post-contact history, and the lasting and devastating impacts of colonization. Binding it all together is Mutton's story, a tale of research, reawakening, and resurgence. Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa has a MA in educational technology and holds a Master Spinner Certificate from Olds College. She is a researcher of Coast Salish spinning and collaborates with museums and Indigenous communities, sharing her knowledge through research writing, workshops and lectures. Her research and publications focus on Coast Salish textiles, with articles in textile-related. magazines (Spin-Off, Ply, Selvedge) and academic journals (Science, BC Studies). She lives on Protection Island, near Nanaimo, BC. Leslie Eastwood (Samish) carries the ancestral name Helitseliga, and weaves on a traditional upright coast Salish loom, with a focus on regalia for ceremonial purposes. She apprenticed with Rita Louis (Samish/Paquachin), who's woven blankets have been presented to dignitaries of the British Royal Family. Recently Leslie has retired as General Manager of Samish Indian Nation, and provides demonstrations to raise public awareness, and leads wool weaving workshops to promote wool regalia within the Samish community.

TRACY GRAMMER is one of contemporary folk music's most beloved artists, known for her pure, emotive vocals, masterful violin playing, and a guitar style that moves effortlessly between percussive drive and delicate nuance. A gifted storyteller, she brings a rare blend of vulnerability, intimacy, and hard-won insight to the stage. As one fan puts it, "With Tracy, it's never just about the music; it’s a soul journey." Grammer rose to acclaim as half of the "postmodern, mythic American folk" duo Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. From 1998-2001, the duo released three internationally celebrated, chart-topping albums featuring Carter’s mytho-poetic Americana songcraft. In 2002, they toured with Joan Baez as both featured artists and members of her band. Called "the new voice of modern folk music," the duo was in clear ascendancy when, in July 2002, Carter suffered a fatal heart attack mid-tour. He was 49; Grammer, 34. Determined to honor the duo's trajectory and bring Carter's songs - and those of other beloved writers - to wider audiences, Grammer continued touring, releasing several solo and archival recordings. Among them is LITTLE BLUE EGG (Red House Records), the #1 most-played album on Folk Radio in 2012, with that year’s #1 most-played song. She also administers the publishing for Carter's work as well as her own. In 2018, Grammer released LOW TIDE, her first album of original songs. "I didn't see myself as a songwriter until it became the only way to resolve the unanswered questions of my life," she says. "LOW TIDE is an album of revelations, confessions, and ultimately, healing." Co-produced with long-time collaborator Jim Henry, the album was released January 19, 2018 on her own label, Tracy Grammer Music, and was the #9 most-played album on folk radio that year. Grammer performs regularly in theaters, coffeehouses, and festivals across the United States and Canada, with additional appearances in Europe and Japan. She holds the record for the most consecutive appearances at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. She performs solo and in select collaborations, most notably with long-time musical partner Jim Henry, or alongside a rotating cast of respected players including Paul Kochanski, Lorne Entress, and David Chalfant. Discover one of the key figures in Pacific Northwest modernism, who overcame polio as a child and reputational damage during the Red Scare to become the most influential architect our region has yet to produce. In the mid-20th Century, our state was slow to adopt the modern architectural trends flooding Europe, the East Coast, and California. But smartly, Paul Hayden Kirk blended the clean look of modernism with our region’s tradition of building with wood, and crisp lines with Japanese and Native American influences. This talk explores Kirk’s life, along with examples of his work, to paint a portrait of a true Northwest innovator. Come learn about Paul Hayden Kirk, who designed the Lopez Inn (now Islander Lopez) and multiple buildings at Henderson Camps/Camp Nor'wester, as well as mentored other influential architects with designs on Lopez. SPEAKER BIO Dale Kutzera is the author of Paul Hayden Kirk and the Rise of Northwest Modern, the first monograph on the father of mid-century design in the Pacific Northwest. Kutzera has spent his life largely in the arts sector and entertainment industry.

The story chronicles the lives of prodigal son (Matt) and his father (Clarence) who are at odds over their own rage-fueled life choices. With humor, grit, and in-your-face honesty, Hammer Lane tells the story of these two men living different sides of one story�"a story about rejection, regret, separation, and the search for redemption. Full Description TBA Understanding the environmental and cultural consequences of the Treaty of Point Elliot (1855) presented by Professor Joshua Reid (Snohomish) Born and raised in Washington State, Dr. Joshua L Reid (registered member of the Snohomish Indian Nation) is an associate professor of American Indian Studies and the John Calhoun Smith Memorial Endowed Associate Professor of History at the University of Washington. He holds degrees from Yale University and the University of California, Davis. Reid has also received awards, grants, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Western History Association, and the University of Washington, among others. His publications include the award-winning The Sea Is My Country: The Maritime World of the Makahs (Yale 2015). He currently directs the UW’s Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest.
